Breaking the Sound Barrier is a 2 year project working with 8 - 18 year olds in West Somerset and Taunton Dean areas of Somerset. |

The project is jointly run by Take Art and Actiontrack Performance Company. This ambitious project has broken new ground for youth music in Somerset and has included: |

| |
- Hosting residencies and workshops with international musicians Black Umfolosi, Oojami, The Dhol Foundation, Asere and Jaipur Brassband.
- Breaking bands, working with 8 new bands to write, record and perform new music.
- Delivery of hundreds of workshops exploring music, production and performance.
- A creative professional development weekend for adults working with young musicians.
- A CD project, showbuilds and numerous concerts.
- Professional development and mentoring opportunities for trainee staff attached to the project.

Outcomes to date have included: |

- Over 500 people have taken part in workshops, concerts and studio recordings.
- Increased opportunities for participation in live music-making across the districts.
- Increased understanding and knowledge of non-western music and culture.
- Increased access for schools to professional artists and musicians.
- Increased skills and confidence in music technology, composition and performance, demonstrated by both pupils and teaching staff.
- New interests, friendships and collaborations have been created as a result of young people's participation in the project.

The project has complimented as well as enhanced current music and performance with both pupils and teachers challenging their perceptions about what the possibilities can be. |
